Can't edit .rtf files

Hi! :)

I have the latest version of Microsoft Word, having installed it just a few
weeks ago from Microsoft's website. The problem is that it won't let me edit
..rtf files. It'll let me read them and highlight 'n' copy text to the
clipboard, but it won't let me edit them. What's wrong?

Best to ask the experts in an MS Word newsgroup.

I tried to find one before posting here, but couldn't do you know where there
is one among Microsoft's newgroups?

There are about a dozen of them, e.g.
microsoft.public.word.newusers
microsoft.public.word.conversions

You can put the names of these newsgroups into a Google
search file to get the equivalent web addresses.

Seeing that Outlook Express is installed by default on all
Windows machines, I strongly recommend that you use
it to read/write your news items. All you need is the name
of the news server: news.microsoft.com.

Is it possible they're marked read-only? Find one in Windows Explorer,
right-click it, and choose "Properties". If there's a checkmark in the
Read-only box, click it to get rid of it.

I don't have a newsreader. Are those available through webbrowser?

You are posting in a Windows XP newsgroup, presumably because you have
Windows XP. Windows XP comes with a news reader called Outlook Express.
Use the new account wizard to set up a news account on the server named
msnews.microsoft.com using the default port (119)

The msnews.microsoft.com news server mirrors the web based discussion
groups available through the "All Groups by Name" link near the bottom
right corner of
http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx. The group
tree in the left pane of the window allows the selection of groups in a
manner very similar to operation of the folder tree in Windows Explorer.
You should be able to expand branches of the tree by clicking the plus
signs in the boxes down the left edge of the window.
