Can't Download PDF Files (Ocget.dll error)

I’m running 98SE, Internet Explorer 6.0, and have Acrobat Reader 6.0
installed. When trying to download a PDF file from the internet, I get an
error message that reads:

Security Warning

Do you want to install and run http://activex.microsoft.com/objects/ocget.dll?

The publisher cannot be determined due to the problems below:

The object to be verified is unknown to the Trust Provider.

Yes. No.

When I answer Yes, I end up with a little red X in the upper left hand
corner of a blank web page, and nothing else happens. This happens with PDF
files from every web site I’ve tried, including big ones like Dell. I’ve
searched the Microsoft knowledge base for help, and only found Article ID
262380, entitled “ActiveX Control Is Not Loaded with Modified CODEBASE Value
in the Registryâ€. There was only one recommended “Fixâ€, which didn’t solve
the problem. In fact, the Registry value in my system was the same as the
article tells you to change it to. I copied and pasted the text from the
article anyway, just to make sure, but it didn’t help fix the problem. By
searching Google I found Microsoft KB article 323207, entitled PRB: Internet
Explorer Makes Unnecessary POST Request to Ocget.dll for .cab Files. Based
on it’s recommendation I deleted the CodeBaseSearchPath data value under the
registry key
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings). This prevented the error message from coming up, but I still got
the red X and blank page just as before. I’ve also checked the security
settings in IE6, and nothing is set to “disableâ€.

Any recommendations you can give me to fix this problem would be much
appreciated.

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

In what Security zone are you running the IE page for the PDF file, Bryan?

Results of your javascript line below are:
;SP1;q313829;Q324929;Q810847;Q813951;Q813489;Q330994;Q818529;Q822925;Q828750;Q824145;Q832894;Q837009;Q831167;Q823353;Q867801;Q833989;Q834707;

As far as I can tell (going to Tools/Internet Options/Security Tab), all
these sites are in the "Internet" Zone, i.e., none are listed in any of the
other zones.

Hope this helps you help me!

Uninstall Acrobat Reader and re-install from the Adobe Web site.

Frank - Since I'm new to this, pls help me understand the purpose of your
msg. No one is emailing on this thread that I'm aware of. I certainly
haven't received any. What indication did you get that caused you to send
the msg you did?

Frank's suggestion was to uninstall Adobe Acrobat - then go to the Adobe
site and redownload and install it.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
This will most likely fix your problem with the inability to download PDF
files.

Frank - Thanks for the advice. I uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat 6.0
and that appears to have solved the problem.
