I'm not sure if this is the best place to post but hope
someone can shine some light onto my problem.

I am trying to install the .NET Framework via the
Microsoft update page and when I attempt this it errors
out. I downloaded this on another computer saved to disk
and then ran it on the Problem computer (the OS is W2K
Pro). When I attempt this it errors out with a Windows
installer Component not installed. Therefore, I found
this on the MS web site and downloaded the current
version. Now, I still get the Windows Installer
Component error and then when I try and reistall the
windows component redistributable, it advises that this
is already installed.

Any help would be and is greatly appreciated.

Hi

See the post below for some cleanup tips before you try
to install it again:

Hi Tom,

One possible cause is that there are Framework residuals on the disk.
Please try the following steps to manually remove the residuals:

1. deleted C:\Windows\assembly
2. deleted C:\Windows\Microsoft .NET
3. deleted C:\Windows\System32\mscoree.dll
4. deleted C:\Windows\System32\URTTemp
5. deleted all MSI's in C:\Windows\Installer that had to do with .NET
6. verified that no residual registry keys were present

Also, check this Knowledge Base article for more information:

PRB: Installation of .NET Framework Fails and Requires Manual Removal
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320112

In addition, I saw a case in which the problem was fixed by running a
repair installation of Windows.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Felix Wu

I'm trying to install the .net framework on both French
and German windows 98 with no success...

I've tried using the french, english, and german dotnet
redistrib's - every one of them hangs after a short time
(the dotnetfx.exe extracts the files and then a few things
show up.. then nothing happens. I've even left
it 'running' overnight with no change)

the english install shows :

copying new files
File: Microsoft.Vsa.dll, Direcotyr: , Size: 18944
Time remaining: 9 seconds

and as I said, does nothing afterward...

THANKS! I'll give it a go.
