Can't Disable Windows Messenger

I don't have this option on my Windows Messenger to be
able to turn it off!

In Tools-Options-Preferences (Under General) there are
only 2 options, these being Allow this program to run in
the background and Show me "Away" when I'm ......

Then open up Messenger (you'll find it under the start
menu under either Windows Messenger or
MSN Messenger, depending on what's installed -- if both
are, you'll need to disable both),
click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab
(or General tab depending on
version), uncheck 'Run this program when Windows
starts', 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows
starts' or 'Automatically run Messenger when I log on to
Windows' (again, depending on
version) and click OK.

Then open up Messenger (you'll find it under the start

click the Tools menu, then Options, then Preferences tab

OK, thanks so far. I have done that, re-installed and
option comes back. I untick it, click ok and then
restart my computer. After MSN Messenger loads up as it
should I still get the message about signing out of .Net
Messenger and in the processes MSMSGS is running. I go
to recheck the option in Tools-Options-Preferneces for
Windows Messenger and the option is missing again ? Done
this twice now and same happens.

Hi Ken,

Do you have Norton Antivirus installed? Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new
"instant messaging scanning" feature, which can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also
keep starting. To stop it, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

Something that I have discovered. Every time I re-
install Windows Messenger to correct the missing icon it
will not let me unless I quit the mcvsftsn.exe (a Mcafee)
process first.

Hi Ken,

I haven't seen any feedback on the latest versions of Mcafee, but from that test, it sounds
like it's using Messenger in some way (which will automatically start it), you might want to
have a browse through Mcafee's options to see if there's some type of Messenger feature.

Yes it is directly related to Virusscan, I have installed
it and the problem goes away - re-install and the problem
comes back! There is only one option in Mcafee to do
with messenger and scanning incoming messages but even
with this un-checked it still does it. Ah well, at least
I know whats causing it - might have to change virus
checkers! Many thanks for youyr time.

And I've just downloaded the Norton's Trial Versian and
now I have no problems so looks like I'll be buying that
one!

Thanks again, Ken.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for the feedback, I'll have to buy a copy of
VirusScan 8 and see what's happening.
