Can't delete text by selecting and hitting backspace anymore.

I use to delete words/sentences by left clicking the mouse, selecting the
text, and htting backspace. My computer won't do that anymore. I'm sure I
just need to click something on a menu somewhere, but I can't find it.
 
Tools | Options | Edit: Typing replaces selection.
