Can't delete partition.

Having some problems and would appreciate any help.

I have 98 on the C: drive. I created an extended DOS partition and installed
2000 on it. I meant to upgrade 2000 to XP but mistalenly did a new install.
Now I can't delete the logical drives, extended partiton, or the primary
partiton. I can't see 2000 and XP on drive D: from 98, so I can't format D:.
And I can't format D: from D:. My products aren't registered, nor can they
be, because they are owned by an educational instition for which I am doing
this assignment. Therefore, I can't use osuninst.exe. The OSs aren't
available in Add/Remove programs.

Thanks in advance.

What/how did you create extended "DOS" partition?
Using 98 or 2K?

Didn't realize you could install 2K on "DOS" partition? Certainly not XP!!

You did a new install of what? XP? on a "DOS" partition?

Now I can't delete the logical drives, extended partition, or the primary
partition. Using what app/command using which OS?

"D" drive is a partition and not a drive? Right?

Talk about a MESS? I'm sorry but you don't seem to know what you're doing at
all. It's going to be real hard to help!

Thanks for the response, Dixonian69.

I installed 2K on a logical drive in the extended DOS partition. 98 is on
the C: drive. 2K is on the D: drive. And, XP is also on the D: drive.

On the "Display Partition Information" page, it says there is one partition,
C: as partiton 1, and under that is partion 2 but it does not show a drive
letter. The new install was of XP. I didn't want to do a new install, though.
It should have been an upgrade. Is there a way to uninstall XP?

When I try to delete logical DOS drives, it says that there are "No logical
drives defined."

I want to keep 98 on C:. And, I want to uninstall XP, if possible. If not,
then, I want to delete the logical drive, or the extended partition. Right
now, I can't delete anything. Are there any commands I could use to delete
XP, or both XP and 2K?

From Micahael Stevens website see # 25

same as I copied!!

"How to Uninstall Windows XP and Revert to a Previous Operating System?"

If you upgraded from Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows 2000, or
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, you cannot uninstall Windows XP.

How to Uninstall Windows XP

Restart your computer in Safe mode. To do so, press the F8 key while Windows
is starting.

Log on using the Administrator account.

Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove
Programs.

When you receive the "Are you sure you want to uninstall Windows XP and
restore your previous operating system?" message, click Yes to start the
Windows XP un-installation process.

After the Windows XP un-installation process is finished, your computer will
shutdown, restart, and then boot to the previously-installed operating system.

One way to delete the extended partition may be to boot with win xp
cd, when it gets to the part of what drive you want pick the one that
you want to delete. Then tell it to delete that partition. After that
if you don't want to keep going with the install just cancel.

Go to the dos fdisk and you should have a partition back.

Other than that you can use partition magic to do what you want to do.
I use it all the time.

It was not an upgrade! It was a new install!

Thanks di! Instead of your idea to to try to reinstall XP, I reinstalled 2000
and had the option to delete the partition. Then I recreated the partition
and installed 2000 on it.

Before that, I couldn't delete or format anything. I even tried gdisk.

Now that I have 2K reinstalled, I am back to the problem of not being able
to upgrade to XP. The last time I tried to upgrade to XP, i booted from the
XP CD and was NOT given the option to upgrade. So, I chose the option "Leave
the current file system intact (no changes)," thinking that it would be an
upgrade. Instead, XP was installed on the same partition as 2K. Yes, I had
two OSs one one partition. So, I ended up having to delete the whole
partition.

I also tried to install XP by booting to 2K first and then inserting the CD,
but upgrading that way is not supported.

My question is: How do I perform an upgrade from 2k to XP without the
Upgrade option available.

Thanks!!

Is you XP an OEM version? If so it looks like it will not do an
upgrade, OEM is for clean install only. Not sure what one you said you
had. You can copy over but not do an upgrade.

Found this
ALL OEM copies can only be installed clean: (that is, the hard
drive must be formatted before XP OEM can be installed). They cannot
be used to perform an upgrade of an existing Operating System so make
sure you back up all necessary data and files BEFORE installing XP
OEM, since the format of the Hard Drive will erase ALL data on it.
