Can't Delete MDB files on System?

A

Al Franz

I am running WinXP SP2 with Access 2003. Had to uninstall a 3rd party
application that was not working for me. All the files were uninstalled for
this application except for two MDB files. I can not delete them, get an
Error.

"Cannot delete App: Access is denied"
"Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
currently in use."

Why am I getting this, since the whole 3rd party application was uninstalled
not sure what is using the file. I have rebooted the system as well.

Two places to look (neither of which involve Access):

- Check the Properties of the folder containing these files, and make
sure that the Permissions are set so that you're allowed to delete
files.

- Check the Properties of the files themselves - right mouseclick in
My Computer or Windows Explorer. On the Security tab check "Full
Control" for Administrator or for the ID as which you are logged on
(you might need to log on as Administrator to do this, or for that
matter to delete the file).

John,

When I bring up properties on the folders and files it shows them as READ
ONLY. I change it but the change does not stay. The folders and files are
in a sub-folder of "d:\Program Files", should that matter?

If I try to change the properties of the files I get "Access Denied"
message. I am logged on as administrator.

Thanks

Is your D: drive a CD/R? If so, it's not updateable. Only a CD/RW
configured to be rewritable will let you delete files.

No the D drive is not a CD drive (smile!)....

Sorry... just following Mr. Holmes' advice to "never neglect the
obvious answer" <smile>

Well, other possibly not quite so obvious problem: might the
permissions on the folder be set such that even an administrator does
not have delete or reset-security privileges?

Where would one go to find these permissions? And to delete them?

Thanks.

I know far less than I should about Windows file security! I'd suggest
you post a question on a WindowsXP newsgroup - this isn't really an
Access problem other than that the file happens to be a database.
