I have my Windows Mail set to delete my deleted items when I close out
Windows mail and it was working, but I noticed this morning there were over
100 messages in the deleted folder when I opened Windows Mail so the first
thing I did was make sure I still showed that option, which I did.
Then I tried deleting the messages and was able to delete a few until I got
an error message saying "an unknown error has occurred." There was a link at
the bottom suggesting I go to the Microsoft Communities so here I am.
Before coming here, I tried to reboot my computer to see if that would help
but it didn't.
And the number of deleted messages in my deleted folder doesn't match the
actual number of messages in that folder.
It says I only have 21 deleted messages but there's more then that.

I just thought I'd add one more thing I discovered.
As I was reading my mail and sending them to the deleted folder box, the
number of deleted messages didn't keep increasing. It seemed to add one more
message for every two messages I put there and I was able to delete these
new messages from the deleted folder.
I still can't delete the ones that must have been there from yesterday.

This issue is being discussed very thoroughly in the newsgroup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail.

Thanks. After I posted this I decided to do a Google search and did find
many messages concerning the same problem so I was able to get rid of my
deleted messages by following someone's advice.
Now everything seems to be ok again, thank goodness.

Highlight the mail you want to delete and hold down the shift key and then the delete key...it will then pop up a window confirming if you want to permanently delete this message...if so just click ok and the mail will be deleted...do this for each mail until they are all deleted...time consuming if you have alot of mail but it should work...let me know if it works.

You can not only do this one-at-a-time but also in groups by selecting each
message and pressing ctrl or even the shift key for whole blocks of
messages.
