Can't delet a directory

I have a directory with video files (about 9 GB) on an external drive.
The file system is NFTS and whenever I try to enter the directory the
drive starts reading like crazy (I can hear it working for a long time,
but no result) the only ting that happens is the application that tries
to acces the directory is frozen. I tried deleting it, but nothing
happens, Windows Explorer either frezes up or it says that the
directory is not empty or that it's being used by another application.
I tried doing it in Safe Mode, but it yeielded the same results. Now
running CHKDSK on the drive to see if it will yield any results. If
anyone can help me thank you in advance.

Is this the same computer the drive was originally formatted and prepared
with? It is possible that the NTFS permissions will not let you get at what
is there.

Is the rest of the drive working okay? You said a directory so I am assuming
there are others that work normally?

The external HDD is USB, and was formated with another PC, I basicly
use it for back-up. The rest of the drive works fine, just that one
directory.

I am running Windows MCE (Media Center Edition)

It seems to be working now after running CHKDSK, so I assume it was
errors or bad sectors on the disk. Thanks to everyone that replied. At
least I didn't have to discard the data and it was saved, it would have
been a pain to put it back on the drive form DVD back-ups.

Thanks to everyone!
