I just upgraded from Windows ME to Windows XP home edition and now I
can't get any type of defrag program to run on my system. Whether I
try to use the defrag program that is built into WinXP or Diskeeper
8.0, the system goes to a black screen, shuts itself down, and
reboots.

Trying to run the defrag option in Safe Mode give me the following
message:

UNABLE TO LAUNCH OR CONNECT TO THE DISKEEPER SERVICE. POSSIBLE CAUSES
ARE THAT ANOTHER DISKEEPER SERVICE IS CURRENTLY CONNECTED TO THIS
COMPUTER OR DISKEEPER IS NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY.
0003
THE SYSTEM COULDN'T FIND THE ENVIRONMENT OPTION THAT WAS ENTERED.

I have run Scandisk in Safe mode and there it finds no errors on my
hard drive.

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong & what I can do to fix it?

My system information:

AMD Athlon(tm) Processor 1.3 GHz
BIOS: COMPAQ - 10503, 05/03/01
MEMORY: 256MB
HD: 55.90 GB

Thanks!

this may not be the case, in 98 i had too many things at
start up to defrag, had to go down to almost nothing
before it would run, maybe disable diskeeper too.

Hi Kim -

Although this seems to be a Windows problem, and not specifically
related to Diskeeper, my primary suggestion would be to contact the
Diskeeper Tech Support folks for help. You can reach them at
(e-mail address removed). If they have seen this issue before, they
should be able to help you get it sorted out.

I hope this helps -

Remove Diskeeper 8 and reboot. Try the WinXP Defrag after. Post back with answer. XP on certain systems does not like 2 instances of same defrag installed. Need to remove one for other to work.

I only have XP defrag and get the same reboot. Microsoft support gave up.
