Can't connect to SQL Express using VB.NET express

I have been trying to connect to my sql database using vb.net express and I
keep getting the following error message

"Failed to generate a user instance of sql server due to failure in starting
a process for the user instance. The connection will be closed"


I have no problem connecting to the database when I use the SQL server
management program. Do you have any ideas what could be causing the problem.
