can't close messages

For one reason or another, the 'X' in the upper right hand corner has
suddenly disappeared, so I can't close any messages after reading them,
what's pretty annoying.
Can anybody tell me how to bring back the 'X'

Right click its icon on the taskbar and select Move. Use the arrow keys to
move the corner back onscreen.
