Can't change wallpaper - XP - SP2

J

JayL

I am trying to change the wallpaper on an XP - SP2 machine. Used to work
fine until a younger family member downloaded who knows what. After
cleaning viruses, etc. my display module in control panel only shows tabs
for Settings and Screen Saver. I know there should be a Desktop tab to
change the wallpaper but its gone.
Any ideas?

TIA

Start Regedit.exe and navigate to:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
and
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

In the right-pane, delete the following values (if exists)

- NoDispBackgroundPage
- NoDispScrSavPage
- NoDispSettingsPage
- NoDispAppearancePage

Don't forget to check both of the above registry keys.

Follow-up with a thorough malware cleanup. Begin with the stand-alone
scanner from Trend Micro, named "Sysclean" package. Trend Micro's Sysclean
package (free), it's capable of eliminating keyloggers, trojans etc. Full

I, too, have the same problem with the Wallpaper Display. i performed the
below task and was able to view the Desktop tab in the Display. However,
when I bring up the Desktop Tab, I'm not able to change or browse the desktop
setting. The wallpaper is some virus "System Notification" message that I
can't get rid of. Is there another registry file that I should delete?

Thanks. Applied Ramesh's fix and it worked. I can see the tab but the
selections are greyed out.
Something similar to SMH's problem.

Make a Registry Edit

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
or
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop
In the right-hand pane, delete "NoChangingWallPaper" or change the value
to 0.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
In the right-hand pane, delete "Wallpaper" and "WallpaperStyle".

Open Control Panel, double-click Display.
Click the Desktop tab, and choose "Customize Desktop".
Select the "Web" tab
Delete all the items except "My current Home page"
Uncheck "My current Home page"
Click OK, and now select (None) as your Desktop background
Click OK and close the dialog.

Then, remove the Wallpaper and WallpaperStyle policies.
