After losing power for 60 hours due to Isabel, I started my PC to find some
really strange things happening:
1) I cannot access AOL (yeah, I know). It's the 9.0 beta. I log in and
get as far as the main screen (even to the audio "welcome" message), then
get an error that says "An error has occurred. If you receive this message
repeatedly, please exit and close AOL, then restart the AOL program".
Did that. Several times. No change.
Click "OK" there enough times, and I get an AOL box that reads "An AOL error
has occurred (01-0002). Your AOL software is currently not working
correctly." followed by:
To fix the problem, follow these steps to quit all other programs that are
running on your computer:
1. Click a program's button on the taskbar (the bar that contains the Start
button and appears by default at the bottom of the desktop).
2. On the File menu of the program, click Exit.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all programs other than AOL.
If the problem continues, follow these steps to clear the cache, which can
improve performance and free up hard drive space:
1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar.
2. Click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Internet Options.
4. In the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Files.
5. Click OK.
If the problem persists, follow these steps to reinstall your AOL software:
1. Insert an AOL CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
2. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
3. Type d:\setup (or e:\setup), then press ENTER.
Obviously none of these things work. When I try to re-install AOL, I get
another error message while the 8.0 software is looking for a current
version. This happens whether I use the CD or try the download. I can't
download 9.0 without first being on AOL, so that's why I'm trying 8.
2) When I try to use WS_FTP pro, I intermittently get an error message
saying that there was an error and I must restart. Unfortunately, I cannot
recreate that at the moment to give you the exact message.
3) I can't go back and do a system restore. (This is usually the answer to
all my problems). When I do, the system looks like it is going to do a
restore, then shuts off. When it comes back up, I get a message that says
the restore was unsuccessful because of a system shutdown.
Norton doesn't pick up a virus, I'm at a loss.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.
