Can't access Windows Applications

J

J Harvey

When I press the "Start" button or Desktop item and click
on an application I get the following Dialogue Box message
"This module was compiled with a trial version of Delphi.
The trial period has expired".

It won't allow me to access the control panel or Windows
Explorer.

Any idea as to how to fix this?

This module was compiled with a trial version of Delphi. The trial period

Plus most likely it will be listed in either MSConfig or as an addin to IE
(eg a BHO cos it does Explorer as well) listed under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browse
r Helper Objects (then look up number under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID to find
the file.

Use Spy++ to identify the process owning the dialog (email me and I lend you
the file) or try and identify which process appears when you start it in
Task Manager's Process tab (press Ctrl + Alt + Delete).

Plus, run Ad-Aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) and update it to current defs. Scan
the unit.

Solution (from Delphi):
In regard to the error message you are receiving, "this
module was compiled with a trial version of Delphi," I
believe that we have finally tracked down what the cause
of this error is. If you are able to open up your
Control Panel via the Start Menu then do so. Some users
have reported that they cannot do this; in this case you
will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To do
this, reboot the machine and press F8 as it is starting
back up. You will be presented with a list of options,
one of which is "Safe Mode." Once you have the Control
Panel open, select "Add/Remove Programs." You will see a
list of applications installed on your machine. One of
these should be called "CPR." This is a rogue program
that seems to have been written with the Trial Edition of
the Delphi language and when that trial expired, so did
the software written with it. Unfortunately, this
software made it onto several users computers before
expiring, leading to the error message you are seeing.
Remove this "CPR"
application with the Add/Remove Programs window, and you
should see these errors go away. The users that I have
spoken to have all reported that this CPR application was
not something they intentionally installed, and have not
reported any negative side effects from the removal of it.--

Dont think so. Add to that the problem with people not have a
desktop/taskbar

No answer on what this is from specifically but contributing from my
newsgroup notes so far:

A thread in winxp.general on Wednesday mentions "shop at home" (a part of
the grokster install). Problem fixed using AdAware.

Another post in winxp.accessibility today mentions having "beast backdoor
192" and is getting the delphi message besides other symptoms. This beast
thing is a giant nasty (RAT, trojan and firewall killer) - also it's
written in Delphi. No feedback in this thread yet. For info on Beast see:
