can't access the registry

Somehow on my XP Pro box I disabled myself from accessing my registry. from run\regedit I'm told access to the registry has been disabled by the admin. Problem there is I'M the admin. I don't know what or how I did this. Where would this seemingly simple permission toggle be?

Make sure you're running virus protection with the latest virus signatures.
One of the semi-recent viruses (I don't remember which one) disables
registry editing.
