I wanted to create restore point before applying a patch and when I try to
access restore, I get the "a problem was encountered, yada yada." So, how
can I get it up and running again?

Thanks. I never ran that before. The error message is "faulting application
rstrui.exe version 5.1.2600.1106, faulting module srrsrt.dll, version
5.1.2600.1142, fault address 0x000095fa

sounds bad... I'll try to look into this but if anyone already knows and can
save me some time...

Looks like one of two things:

One of the system files has been damaged. Easiest thing, as it is a
protected file, is to force a new copy to be brought in by Windows File
Protection. Look in Windows\system32 for srrstr.dll (not srrsrt.dll,
which is a typo), right click and rename, say as srrstr.old. The file
will be replaced from the cache within seconds. Now close and restart
for the new copy to come into service

Or
There is trouble with RAM - but I think you would be seeing failures in
other things as well
