If both computers can ping the router, it makes a physical connectivity issue
kind of unlikely. Start with looking for a firewall problem - be imaginative
and read the whole article.

Next check for an LSP / Winsock problem.

Desktop computer can't ping laptop computer, and router can issue DHCP to
laptop, but can't get its name. Could be a name resolution or protocol issue.
Make sure that all required protocols and services are running on both
computers.

If that doesn't help, go thru my troubleshooting guides.
