strangest thing. I can no longer access cnn.com. At first I figured
their site was down, but friends can access it no problem.

When I enter cnn.com in the address bar, it just takes ages, until
eventually it says the standard .Occasionally Google results appear
but that is the minority of the time, "The page cannot be displayed."
I went so fat as to "always allow" www.cnn.com in the IE security
settings.

All other pages no problems (occasionally a little slower).

Try eliminating DNS problems.... What happens when you enter the
following:

http://64.236.16.116/

If the above works, check your "hosts" file for a bogus entry for
cnn.com. Hosts file located in:
C:/Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts

Start | Run type in: CMD /K IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS <enter> then exit

This of course flushes the DNS cache and sometimes this helps.

Thanks. I'm afraid it didn't help.

By the way, I wonder if this has anything to do with a recent windows
auto update I did. This issue seems to have started since then (i've
since uninstalled them, but the issue persists).

Another weird thing since I did this update, is I no longer need to
click on my account to enter my desktop (like I had to before). It
goes directly to my desktop-this despite my ensuring the "Use the
Welcome Screen" option is checked in the user accounts area (control
panel).

I don't do the autoupdates thing just for that reason.

If the flushdns didn't work, you might try another browser and see if
you have the same problem, Firefox or www.opera.com - if one works ok
you'll at least know it's a problem with IE.

Start | Run CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 <enter> and make sure it's selected
there.

Are you using DSL?

Turn the power off to the modem for a bit, it works wonders.

GREAT idea. Well tried Opera and same thing.

Yup, it is.

Now what? This is bizarre.

As a possible thought, if you are using either SpywareBlaster or Counterspy,
you might disable each one at a time to see if that would help. Recently I
found that I could not access MSN Hotmail. After some detailed
troubleshooting, I discovered that if I "Disabled all Protections" in
SpywareBlaster, I was able to access hotmail without any problems. However,
yesterday there was an update to SpywareBlaster and now I can enable all
protections in SpywareBlaster and still access hotmail without any problems.

Well, this morning I can access it, no problem. After much
troubleshooting with my ISP, to no avail. I decided to contact cnn
asking if they blocked my ISP for something reason. No response, but
this morning it worked fine.

Thanks to all for your efforts and time.D.

Well at first it seemed to start to work, but then took so long I
"refreshed." It the took ages, and again "The page cannot be
displayed" appeared.

Have you tried deleting your temporary files from the Internet Options
Control panel?

John

Hi John,
yes I did try that and it ididn't work at the time.
However now it seems I can access CNN.com
THanks for effort.
