canon pixma iP1500 printer

Bought this printer last week and have found that it doesn't install. I
downloaded the driver off of the internet and it still doesn't seem to work.
It says to retry the connection when it is about to install the printer.
Should be plug and play but doesn't conform with Windows XP. Any IDEAS?
