SamF.

I have read on earlier postings of this board that this program can
still be set up even though the old registration procedure does not
work.

Would someone please tell me how this is done. I did not understand the
earlier explanations.

I am also under the impression that this is still a useful program
under XP. If not are there newer programs that I could use?

Susan Burgher should be along to help you out with this one.

I don't think you'll find a program as versatile as this one. It was a nice
program because it could create self-executing presentations with a wide
variety of special effects.

There are programs such as the free version of PowerBullet presenter that
could achieve similar results but this program isn't as user friendly. Wink
or the Impress presentation module of Open Office might also suit your
needs. I believe Wink can produce standalone presentations, whereas the Open
Office module requires you to have OO installed.

If you are just looking for some sort of slideshow-with-music functionality
without animations or flying elements there are numerous photoalbum-type
programs that will produce these such as FotoAlbum, Irfanview, MyAlbum. Open
Office can also output to Flash format.

Sorry, I don't have URLs for these as I haven't used some of them and I
haven't used others for a long time.

erm. . . this is probably the same info

snippets from ACF posts.

won't instal because the Canon registration system doesn't respond.

It is possible to install (hint FAX)
Better hint please

at the start of the install there is an ini file in a temp directory
that has a line controlling whether or not you get the opportunity to
register by fax. Edit, save and proceed with entering details.

I think most of those (any many others) are listed in this general area
of the ACF Graphics page:

After you started the installation were you able to find the temp
directory that had the Canon Mediator files?

Yes, I believe I did find it. I went to where mediator said it was
putting the files.

Installing that app has been on my todo list forever. . . decided it
was time to give it a try. Some time later. . . ;) Yea! here's how:

1. Start Windows Explorer
2. start the program installation.
3. Before you click next to start the registration process switch to
Windows Explorer (use CTL-ALT-DEL to switch tasks)
4. search for cmi.ini (the initiation file)
5. open that file and change "Fax/MailEreg=NO" to "Fax/MailEreg=YES"
6. save the file and close it.
7. switch back to the program installation and proceed with the
installation, choosing the Faz option for registration.

It worked for me. Thank You

So how about a quick review of the program. Is it easy to use? Is
there a manual? I'm not even sure what all the program does. Google
was not my friend. It is presentation software, but I need small words.
Thanks

Think slideshows plus. :) I don't know enough to post a review. I
installed it and I've read a bit of the manual (which seems fairly
comprehensive). Michael Laplante gave a brief review earlier in the thread.

What it is:
Powerpoint plus sort of program.

What it does:
- Slideshows with music and / or sound effects. (wav or midi iirc, no mp3s)

- Within a slide you can have numerous graphics appearing and disappearting
according to either a user-defined timeline, or clickable 'hot spots' (see
below)

- Allows for animations, i.e. graphics can move about on a slide following
"paths" that are user defined. Flying elements can be fixed graphics (e.g.
jpg's) or animations (avi's but not animated gifs). For example, my
Halloween e-cards featured flying ghosts and pumpkins.

- Allows for clickable "hot spots" on a slide. User clicks the spot to cause
some other event such as advancing the slide, etc. In one Christmas card, I
prompted the user to click the snowman. Presto, suddenly there is snow
drifting downward. I prompted them to click the fireplace, the stockings
appear. Click the Christmas tree, the lights come on -- that sort of thing.

- Can create self-executing shows or ones that can be viewed with an
installed viewer

Limitations:
- Editing the time line is a three step process which can be a pain, i.e.
you can't view your changes unless you exit the timeline, run it in preview
mode then return to time line (via two steps) to modify if required. Not a
huge deal though.

- Limited number of slides allowed in free version. I don't think this is
explicitly stated in the documentation. I ran into it accidentally while
putting together a long show and the notice came up. I forget the limit (10
slides?) but it was never an issue with me. In theory you could put together
an entire show using just one slide and all your graphics but the editing
could get hairy as you'd have to keep track of all the visible and invisible
elements on the one page, their timings and relative order.

I quite like this program. I used it to compose e-cards that were always
well received. (I had secret hopes that one of my cards might even fan out
across the Internet. In some of them, I put secret Easter eggs as a type of
copyright on them.) I don't use it anymore as most people don't like getting
exe files (understandably).

I wouldn't use it for straight up slideshow-with-music shows as there are
easier ways to do that but for interactivity with the viewer it's a great
program.
