Canon FS4000 and Silverfast

Does anyone have experience using the full version of Silverfast with the
Canon FS4000, particularly the effectiveness of dust and scratch removal?
The evaluation version has that function disabled, and I don't want to put
the considerable amount they want for the full version if the infrared
cleaning is no better than FilmGet or Vuescan.

As software goes, I just don't like FilmGet and have been using Vuescan. I
really can't tell how effective Vuescan is because my scanner has been out
of whack --- infrared lamp out of alignment. It is due back from Canon this
week, and I will be testing the various versions of Vuescan I have when it
does get back. However, given the amount of scanning I do, I would be
willing to pay the price to get the best possible dust and scratch removal.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The last time I looked, Silverfast did not support IR on the Canon
FS4000. Has that changed?

Yes, SE doesn't support IR. Also, AI is no longer available for the
FS4000 (according to the web page).

I have been using this scanner for years with Canon software and Vuescan.
My experience has been that the Canon software with minimal adjustment does
better with color negative materials than Vuescan.
In my experience Vuescan is far surperior for scanning transparencies.
I tried the Silverfast demo extensively and decided that for the way I do
things I would not routinely want to make extensive pre-scanning
adjustments. Except for some poorly exposed, hard to scan images I
definitely prefer to make most adjustments post-scan in Photoshop. I would
prefer to invest in Photoshop upgrades and plug-ins rather than Silverfast.
If you are a pre-scan adjustment type then I would get Silverfast: it seems
far more sophisticated than Vuescan.
Consider one thing: the FS4000 is an old, slow scanner that was never
upgraded in design and I believe that Canon has discontinued.
Perhaps rather than buying Silverfast it would be better to save money to
invest in a better, newer film scanner before none are available anymore.
