Cannot use object linking and embedding - MS039 Fixes this

We had 12 or so computers crash today. All pc's were
crashing when excel was opened.The error was Cannot use
object linking and embedding error 4097. After looking
the similarities, it appeared none of them had ms03-039.
Once the patch was installed, the problem went away.

Some other discrepencies were...IE was not opening
properly, windows update would not open as well.

I am just trying to figure out what happened, and looking
for an explanation.
