Cannot start XP because of corrupt "system" file

I get a message that the windows\system32\config\system
file is missing or corrupt. I have fixed the problem by
reloading windows a number of times, but I don't know
what is causing it and I wonder if I can fix it in the
recovery console. Nothing I have tried, including
replacing the file, havn't worked. Any suggestions.

If the problem recurs, try swapping out the RAM chip/s for a high-quality,
single 512 chip - even if the current RAM test okay. XP is reportedly
sensitive to memory timing, and I can tell you from personal experience
that this fix solved the problem (and others) here. Worth a test.
