cannot share files

i have an xp desktop connected via ethernet to a linksys wireless g router.
i have a laptop recently upgraded from w98 to xp. i cannot access my
desktops shared files from the laptop. i can ping computers both ways. i
can find the desktop in my laptops "my network places" but when i click on it
i get the following error:

\\desktop is not accessible. you might not have permission to use this
network resource. contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. access is denied.

both computers have the same workgroup name and the firewalls in all my
network connections are disabled.

can anyone help?
