Core2Duo, V Business

Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center

UAC approved (I'm the administrator)

When I click on Set a Restore Point under Tasks, I get a
System Properties dialog box.

Computer Name - Hardware - Advanced - Remote

No opportunity (that I can find) to get to the Restore area.

That SHOULD work, but regardless of how I go about it I
do not see the SYSTEM PROTECTION tab, so cannot get to
the SET A RESTORE POINT option.

What could be going on?

Thanks to all, but...

Nothing - and I mean NOTHING - including Safe Mode -
gave me access to System Protection. I tried a lot of
ways to get there, read and followed the various guides
and tutorials, but with no luck at all.

In Safe Mode, one of the possibilities would have
permitted me to Restore, but not to set a new Restore
point. I truly do not wish to go back to an earlier date.

??

Hank,
I understand your issue is that you do not even have the System Protection
tab on the System Properties window. Is it possible that your harddrive is
formatted as FAT32, rather than NTFS, since FAT32 does not support system
restore. That would explain the lack of a tab for that function.

Although not recommended (and I've read it's difficult to do), Vista can be
installed on a FAT32 formatted drive, so it's possible that's what you have.

Great guess but no, there was a Restore capability on
this drive, which is as-issued when new (NTFS,
presumably). I saw "Restore dates" as recently as Feb 27.

Okay, another possibility: is the hard drive low on free space?
Microsoft KB article ID 300044
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300044/en-us), "How the System Restore Tool
Handles Hard-Disk Space Usage" speaks to the impact of low available space on
System Restore.

The article does not state that the tab would be missing, but it was written
for XP; perhaps Vista handles it differently.

That's my last guess of the morning; way too late here in Florida.

Control Panel > Backup and Restore Center

This has nothing to do with 'System Restore' and restore points, but
is to do with the backup and restore system that comes with the
business and ultimate versions of Vista.

I find the easiest way to get to the 'set a restore point' dialog is
to generate a shortcut on the Desktop, pointing to
'SystemPropertiesProtection.exe'.

I can create that shortcut, but it produces a System
Properties box without the Protection tab.

The hard drive is one-third filled.

Frustrating -

I think there's some switch or another turned OFF, but
unless someone can figure it out I'll have to go to Safe
Mode and use the Feb27 Restore point. Hopefully that
will fix things, but it will also lose some things that
I've installed.

Hank,

Have you or anyone else disabled System Restore using Group Policy?
Just to make sure open the Registry to the following branch and key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
NT\SystemRestore\DisableSR
If the value exists and is non 0 "zero" then System Restore is completely
disabled and you will not see System Protection tab.

That's right. That's the dialog for creating and using System
Restore points.

This looked like a great clue, HOWEVER:

I went into the Registry, and to the right point. The
suggested key (SystemRestore\) is simply not present
under Windows NT.

GeneralizeSystemRestore was one level up, value -0-. The
string SystemRestore appears a few times, but nowhere
does it appear to be ON/OFF.

Hi Hank,

Well I have spent most of the evening searching anything that I could find
they may be causing your problem. I've read over many web pages, searched
through my Registry for any clues and although I've had a few new thoughts,
nothing I can see that could put my figure on. I like a challenge and I'm
not giving up just yet unless you decide you are ready to. Have you
considered running SFC? the reason I ask is through my search in the
Registry I found nothing to point me to the "text" that is displayed on one
of the many System Restore windows. I was looking for "To create a restore
point, open System Protection". A lot of these text descriptions are written
in the Registry and this one appears not to be. Therefore, it must be in one
of the files that System Restore uses. If yours is not displaying this text
it leaves me to believe a file may be corrupt.

I think it's worth a shot and you can read about SFC here....

Before you try this just remember you may be asked to insert your Vista DVD.

I caved, and went to Safe Mode, then to a Restore Point
from Feb27.

It took a while, and I lost a few things.

NO DIFFERENCE. And, it's *not* reversible because I
cannot get to the Restore Point function - still!

I am contemplating a more drastic action...

Hank,

Hang in there just a little longer OK?
I think I have became fixated on your problem and can't stop looking.
I've close one eye and let it sleep while the other keeps searching :>)

Please keep us informed as to you'r progress.

Keep Looking Up ;)

I won't give up that easily, and wish to thank all the
missionaries here for not screaming UBUNTU! at me. I've
tried that, and the work I need to do can't be done with
that OS.

I welcome anyone with ideas on why the whole Restore
system seems to have gone awry.

I'm the only user of this unit, and most of what I've
tried was "Run as Administrator".

If there is a way to achieve a higher level of power,
I'm all ears!!

Hey, Kid -

I thought your advice might do it. Elevating myself to
Deity Status... Becoming the Supreme Power... Donning
the Cloak of Godhood... Well, I did it.

But that Protection tab remains invisible.

@#$%!!

I have an integrated SP1 Vista disk enroute to me -
should arrive next week. That will do it.

Thanks for trying.
