Cannot see pictures on web pages?

When I open web pages/sites I see numerous blank windows/pictures with
a small icon in the top left-hand corner. How do I set Iexplorer 6.0 so that
I
can see these pictures/windows running WinXP SP2?

Is the icon a red "X" perhaps?
