Cannot see picture inserts in Powerpoint

I'm using Powerpoint 2003. When I insert a picture or object, I cannot see
the graphic in the working window. It shows up when I print and in the
preview slide on the left but not in the preview windo or working window. I
can select the graphic and see the outline, move it around but I can't see
what the graphic looks like.

Any idea what setting I have set up wrong?
