Is the fact that GEF and gef are not the same case have anything to do
with it?

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\>nbtstat -n

Local Area Connection 2:
Node IpAddress: [199.106.11.10] Scope Id: []

NetBIOS Local Name Table

Name Type Status
---------------------------------------------
GEF <00> UNIQUE Registered
GEF <20> UNIQUE Registered
ENGINEERING <00> GROUP Registered
ConfigServer <1C> GROUP Registered
ENGINEERING <1E> GROUP Registered
gef <2D> UNIQUE Registered

Also the net view command does not list my computer either on the
local computer nor any other ENGINEERING computer but I can connect to
it if I type in the name manually??

Any ideas?

Well, the news server has been down a lot of today.

Your NBTSTAT output is strange.
A bit of a mess, really.

The machine is claiming to be a Domain Controller (1C ) for the domain
'ConfigServer'.
But it's a member of the workgroup 'ENGINEERING'.

I don't know why it's registering the 1C name.

Is there some history to this?
Like installing some oddball software which may have done this?
Do you know what 'ConfigServer' is?

Is the browser service running on this machine?
I'd have expected to see the ENGINEERING <1E> name registered.

What username are you logged on as?
Is the Messenger service running?
I'd have expected to see the UserName <03> name registered.

I have no idea what registered the <2D> name.

Basically, an XP machine out-of-the-box doesn't look like this.
You need to look at what you have done to it since it was installed.
The answer lies in some configuration change of software you have installed.
