Cannot run any system exe files (Windows XP)

Hi,
I have having problems with opening most files on my Windows XP system (i.e.
Internet explorer, Windows Media player, Office, etc) and even trying to run
applications stored in my CD. I find that it is mostly EXE files that I
cannot run. It gives me an error stating something like "[Program location]
cannot be found". This happened after I updated my Norton anti-virus
definitions and then restarted my computer. Anyone have any clue as to
what's wrong?? My computer currently has Service Pack 1.
