Cannot remove Menu items

After installing a scanner XL has 2 new menu items 'Acquire Settings'
and 'Acquire data'. If I remove these by customising the menu they
return after closing XL and re-opening. They are also not affecting by
the usage stats and stay visible at all times - often they are the only
items I see when I select 'File'.

There are no macros. I have looked everywhere for an XLStart file or
anything that looks like it might be opened when XL starts but have
found nothing. I have deleted the Excel.xlb file and let it be recreated
and still they return.

Any suggestions?

As Greg said, see if anything is checked under Tools, Add-ins.

Anything in Tools|Addins that looks suspicious?

Excel also starts up files that are mentioned in the Windows registry.

In xl2002, the registry key is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Options
(look for OPEN, OPEN1, OPEN2, etc.)

I think that these have to be in nice consecutive order. So you might have to
rename some to make them consecutive again (after you delete the offending one).

And since you're working in the registry, make sure you back it up before you
start.
