cannot purge deleted items folder

Suddenly, the "empty deleted items" command no longer works. I cannot purge
the entire folder. I can go through each item seperately, and delete it, but
it is a slow process.
 
Open Deleted Items Folder >
left click on one of the messages, anyone >
press Ctrl key and HOLD >
press A key >( all messages are now " shaded " )
click Delete.
If you have a lot in the folder, it will take a few extra seconds to finish
purging.

One more suggestion :
Tools > Options >Advanced > Maintenance. Put a 'tick' on " Empty messages
from 'deleted items' folder on exit > Close > OK.
