Cannot operate the slider bars of Windows Moviemaker.

I am replaying movies copied from TV, but when I play them with Moviemaker
it is not possible to adjust the brightness/contrast.
Please help, Frank
 
They are "mpeg movie files" and they are the result of recording TV movies.

These recorded movies are always darker than the originals and so need
brightness and contrast adjustment.
Do I have to convert the file to some other type?
 
I changed the file fom mpg to AVI and this fixed it, but the resulting file
was about twice the size.
Why is this?
