Cannot open Word Documents

Using Office 2003 under the Windows 2000 environment, I am suddenly having
trouble opening many of my Word documents. This has just started just a few
days ago. Any ideas on what is going on here and what to do to correct it?

When I doubleclick on My Documents, then doubleclick the document of my
choice, the document changes to dark blue to indicate it has been selected
but does not open. I have waited for almost 5 minutes but to no avail.
 
Hi,

Have you tried starting Word and:
.. opening the documents from there?, or
.. using Help|Detect and Repair'?
