i am running xp pro, fully updated.when i try to open windows firewall
settings,i get this error notice *due to an unidentified error, windows
cannot open windows firewall settings*i have looked in admin tools ,services
and the security center is not listed. the only reference to security is
*security accounts*.i do not know if the firewall is on or off cause of this
error.any advice would be helpful

Do a malware cleanup, and re-apply XP SP2. The missing services should be
restored.

thank you very much, ramesh.when you say re apply sp2,do you mean
uninstall/reinstall,or is there another way to do this

hi ramesh.the link to *sharedaccess.reg*seems to have cured the
problem.thanks again
alan

Glad that helped, Alan. Yes, I had that .REG fix in mind, but the problem
does not occur by itself (along with the missing Security Center service).
Hence I suggested to run a malware cleanup first.

ramesh.regarding previous post.the firewall appears to be on,cause it askes
permision for programmes to be allowed access.my problem now is,in admin
tools-services-the security center is still missing.if i scroll down in
services to windows firewall,it says firewall is started but the is no option
to set it to automatic, stopped ect.if i right click on windows firewall in
services,it says cannot access this file.I tried all the options you
suggested on your site.the command promt NETSH FIREWALL RESET comes up as
invalid.is it worth while uninstall/reinstall sp2.if so,is it a simple
procedure to do so.also,in control panel-security center *change the way
windows alerts me of security setting changes* is greyed out
alan

Alan,

Reinstalling Windows XP SP2 should bring back the missing services.
