Cannot Network on LAN

I'm getting the following error:

you might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions
//the network path was not found

I've tried the fixes noted on Microsoft's help pages - none worked. I'm
dealing with XP home edition on both machines. I'd be happy to upgrade to XP
Pro on one machine but the other doesn't belong to me so that's not an option.

I can see the other computer in network places - the username/password
matches on both machines. I'm out of options. Anyone know how to fix this
recurring problem? I really need to be able to network between machines.

Most likely it's a NetBT / firewall issue.

If that doesn't help, go through my Error 53 tutorial.
