Cannot merge cells, old spreadsheets, new Excel

Using Excel2002, having upgraded from Excel'97.

Whenever I open up an old spreadsheet, the "merge cells"
command is not accessible. It it grayed out on the
toolbar, and if I try to manually format a
cell/cells, "merge cells" is checked and grayed out for
every cell in the worksheet.

This is not the case in new spreadsheets that I create in
2002, or when I copy the material from the old and put it
into the new.

I need to be able to edit these old sheets, though.

It sounds to me that you have a shared workbook. If you look at 'Limitations
of shared workbooks' in Help, you will see what sharing workbooks restricts.

Nothing you can do I am afraid apart from copy the data to a new workbook.
