I had a bout with some spyware and used HiJack this and Ad-Aware to remove
some crap. Did a restart and got an error message after signing in:

title: Windows Product Activation
msg: A problem is preventing windows from accurately checking the license
for this computer. Error Code: 0x80040005

I am unable to go any further as windows automatically logs off after
clicking ok.
I reversed the changes made by HiJack this and Ad-Aware and rebooted to same
error msg.
I am unable to sign in as administrator or any other user unless in safe
mode.
I am running XP Pro SP2.
This is the first time I have encountered this error so I do not know how to
proceed.

Help would be greatly appreciated as I can't do much of anything until I fix
my box!

I wonder if this is the same problem I had due to spyware. Try booting
in "safe mode with network support" and logging in as Administrator.
Click Start -> Run then type cmd and hit enter. In the command screen
type
ipconfig /release
and hit enter, then type
ipconfig /renew
and hit enter. Does it come up with an error message? If so, is it

"an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket"

If so, you need to re-install TCP/IP. See
