XP Home on a Dell.
That's what I get when I try to remove a number of programs, better than half of removals.
The install log is right in the program's folder under C:\Program Files. It's not missing.
I use Add/Remove and the program's own entry under Programs.
I reinstall the program, with the same result.
The only button to push is "OK".
All Microsoft updates are complete.

All I can do is delete the program from the Program Files folder. I don't think that's doing the registry much good. And there are probably linked items that aren't getting deleted. But it's the best I can do.

Any advice much appreciated.

You can uninstall the software or program you want to remove with the help of uninstall key in the registry

Go in registry and look for the uninstall key in the registry and click on plus sing beside it and you will get the name of software or program you want to uninstall underneath it.When you select it you will get uninstall string at right hand site double click on it and copy the the value data from it and past it in run and hit ok.It will prompt you to uninstall.
Path of the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

The same thing happened to me five minutes ago but with
some programs you can still fix it. Go to the folder
where the program is installed and launch the
uninstallation program from there and if you get the same
message you will be asked to find the LOG file instead of
just giving you a OK button to click. So just find the
LOG file that belongs to the program and it should
uninstall. This does not work with every program though.

Thank you.
I've saved your post and will try it.

This seems like one of those situations where a small program or script might be helpful. A number of people had made similar inquiries before mine.
I downloaded a script for clearing prefetch that was the only way to get a virus off the kids' computer. Trick was to identify what the executable was named and where it was hiding...

The program's uninstall in the folder has always given me the same response. I even tried deleting the folder and reinstalling the program without success.

Maybe the registry key approach mentioned in another post will do it, though I'm wondering why the program uninstall wouldn't be using the same key. Best to test it out, of course.
Thinking aloud, because some programs use 3rd party uninstallers, maybe there's a bug that shows up in more than one program. On the other hand, I'm saving msicuu.exe in case it's needed again, so maybe uninstaller problems are general.
Another possibility: some programs update by overlaying previous installs. Maybe that changes something?
Any speculations?

Curious, the program you are trying to uninstall, is it in a folder with a long
file name? That is, one that is more than eight character long?

If you want to experiment with a specific program, here's the one that finally led to the question: Net Transport by Xi. The folder name in Program Files is Xi, the subfolder Net Transport 2. It's a download manager.

I reinstalled because, when updating to a newer version without removing, it accumulates entries in Add/Remove. Single or multiple entries on the list, it can't find the log, usually.
