cannot locate files (any) part 2

to add even more confusion to the situation (please read
the first installment of my problem), i have found that i
can open some programs by opening associated files. for
instance, i can't open winamp directly, but by right
clicking on an mp3 and choosing play, winamp opens. this
does not work for all programs however. i was not able
to open media player by try a media file. so confused...
 
You may want to put all the parts of the story together for us. But have
mercy and edit for brevity and clarity. Thanks.
