cannot load printer software

when i try to put my printer software in this keeps
coming up
C:\windows\system32\AUTOEXEC.NT
system file not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft
windows applications and then it gives you the option to
cancel or ignore the message.
if got the printout from http://support.microsoft.com/?
kbid=324767 but dont understand this parts (Right-click
the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 folder, and then click Paste).&
(Locate the Command.com file, right-click the expanded
Command.com file,) where would i find this

What printer, and did you download the proper XP drivers/software from the
manufacturer's website?

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit
Windows-based program

Also can be caused by a Trojan installing a file windupdater.exe and
creating registry entries for that file.

AVAST (free antivirus software) can be the cause if SP2 is installed:

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt by copying a backup
copy held in windows\repair to windows\system32.
