Cannot link workbooks by selecting 2nd workbook cell

I have a real problem, I've got a bunch of links I've got to create between workbooks. Neither are protected (I removed all protection) there is no VB code running. If I have both workbooks open, do = in a cell, open the other workbook, I can't select anything. The only thing I can do is select the entire workbook, not a single cell. If I try to select a single cell it just doesn't do anything, or it might turn my mouse pointer into a NO symbol - O with a / thru it. If I double click, it just maximizes the workbook, still won't allow me to select a cell. Even if I open it in safe mode, same thing. HELP!
I can link from the workbook to another, but can't link back to it...

pkley,

Are they in separate instances of Excel? You should be able to see both
names if you click Window.
