Cannot launch Access

Today I have been experiencing a problem trying to open Access.

If if select either a shortcut to an existing database I often use, or
select Access from the Start Menu (All Programs) my PC would freeze. The CPU
usage would rise to 100% and I could do nothing apart from unplug and take
the battery out to close down.

This only happened in Access and not in any other Microsoft or other programs.

I undertook a repair using my install disc and when that did not work an
uninstall and reinstall of Access. This did not work.

However, I have found if I select 'open an office file' and select and
Access database, I can open any Access file correctly. Once I have done this
I can close and open access from the Start Menu as one should.

Once I close down my PC and re-start I am back to the original problem and I
can only unplug, restart and launch Access through 'open an office file'.

Has any one come across this before or have any suggestions on how I could
resolve this. I use Access 2003.

Thanks in anticipation of your assistance.

Since you have already uninstalled and reinstalled Access, something else
has gone haywire.

You must might be able to circumvent this by dumping the Access shortcut
that Office installs (which is tied to the registry), and instead create a
shortcut to msaccess directly. To test this out, open the Windows Explorer
(My Computer), and navigate to the folder where Access is installed -
typically C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office. *Right*-drag
msaccess.exe to (say) the desktop, and choose Create Shortcut. (It's
important to right-drag so you don't move the file.)

If this shortcut works for you, you can delete the bad shortcuts and use
this one instead.

Thank you Allen for your reply.

I have just tried your suggestion but unfortunately I am receiving the same
erros. Do you have any other ideas or suggestions?

Thank you.

Stuart, I don't know what else to suggest.
Perhaps someone else will contribute a useful idea.

It's odd that this was not fixed by a reinstall.
If you are not logged in as a local computer administrator, you might see if
that makes a difference.

Otherwise, something like deleting all the temp files on your drive and then
running ChkDsk might fix a problem.
