the win xp sp2 disc that was sent to me by MS doesn't install properly. It
gets half way through file extraction and then halts with a message that
says cyclic redundancy check , what do I do?

CRC means that the system is facing a 'read' error off the CD.

You can attempt to copy the entire CD onto a folder of your Hard Drive.

Then attempt to install sp2.

If this fails call MS and ask for a replacement CD

That usually means something is wrong with the CD.
Carefully clean the CD.

Open the CD and copy "XPSP2.EXE" to the Desktop then remove the CD.
That is the SP-2 file, nothing else is important for SP-2
installation.
Simply double click that exe and follow the prompts to install Service
Pack-2 and follow the prompts.
