After having problem getting my Windows to read as genuine, someone from the
telphone support staff got it working. Now automatic updates do not work, yet
when I try to install Defender, I get a message saying that the Update file
cannot be verified, and another message saying I need to download some
updates from the site. I go to the site, and the page just loads and then
nothing happens.

By site do you men the Windows Update site? You should post your windows
update question to the experts in the windows update newsgroup. Include all
the error messages your getting: microsoft.public.windowsupdate.

For the Defender issue if fixing windows update doesn't allow it to be
installed then post with details to one of the Defender newsgroups:

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender support
