I cannot install software. Everytime I try to install it I get an error.
Will someone please respond?

This is the error message that I get.

C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT . The system file is not suitable for
running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to
terminate the application.

I am running Windows XP home on a P4 2.4 system with 1 gig memory

First I would check program compatibility. It sounds
like you are attempting to install a file that runs in a
dos environment and requires the autoexec file. Check
for available updates on the vendors website. Or you can
try running the install from a dos window after you've
created an autoexec.bat file in your root directory,
although I've no idea if that will work, it is just a
suggestion.

actually it happens with different software, the latest of which was the
software for a new printer. When I contacted Epson they tell me that it
works on their computers The software does say it is for Windows XP so I am
thinking perhaps there is a problem with one of my files but which one and
what that problem is I do not have a clue.

There is a utility out there, I am sorry, but the name
eludes me at the moment, but it can scan your system
files and tell you what is different, then you can
restore the files from your install disk. I forget where
in the microsoft website I found it, but it worked to
reinstall some dlls and save a machine for me.

Is this a Stylus 875DCS, the Status Monitor app perchance?
If so this problem has also been reported for win2K o/s

Appeared a bit of a coincidence to me, its the same series printer, I think.
I had a similar problem to this once, I finally tracked it down using
msconfig to disable all startups, was able then to install without a
problem. Further looking found it was caused by a specific java application.
