cannot install printer after upgrade....

I upgraded a workstation at my office from Windows ME to
Windows XP Professional. Since this time, I have had
trouble with the LPT1 port. I have already deleted and
reinstalled this port numerous times, but still cannot
get the computer and the printer to respond.
Any suggestions other than wiping hard drive and starting
fresh with XP Pro?
