"Cannot Install Hardware" USB problem

I recently reformatted my computer and started from a fresh copy of windows the problem i am having is when i try to use my USB items such as a web cam, USB flash drives and IDE to USB2.0. when ever i try to install these i get the hardware install screen as ussual but installation always fails with a "data invaild" error message as described in KB810882. ive tried the solution they provide there but it doesnt seem to work, i have changed nothing with the computer and i am sure that all the devices work on other machines the only USB device that is working is my mouse which was present during the installation of windows, other than that no other USB devices will install. anyone got any ideas

When plugging in your previously working USB device, do
not allow XP to automatically install the driver. Select
the location manually and point it to C:\windows\inf
(change the location of your systemroot if necessary for
your system).

I have two XP PCs (desktop and laptop) and one auto-
installs everything without a hitch and I have to
manually point to the inf folder everytime on the other.
Needless to say, I'm real careful to always use the same
USB port each time I plug in a device.

thanks for the reply but it doesnt seem to have stopped
the error message at the end though (its still the same
old 'data invaild')
