Cannot Install ANY new software

I have XP Home on this computer, and we have purchased several different
software titles for our 4 year old daughter. When I try to install the
software with the setup.exe file, the CD spins up, the little hourglass shows
up with the arrow....and then nothing happens.

At first, I thought that it was the software itself. However, after trying
numerous software titles over and over, it has to be something with my
computer itself. I ran Norton AntiVirus and all of the updates....nothing.
Anyone have any clue?

I'm frustrated b/c we cannot use any of the software we have purchased. It
just seems silly. I've searched for other topics on this, and haven't found
one like mine.

Any help would be VERY much appreciated.

Hi,

Are they compatible with XP? If not, use the Compatibility mode:

HOW TO: Use the Program Compatibility Wizard
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q301911

Software Compatibility Site for Windows XP

http://www.xpsc.net/

If this isn't the issue and whether or not the auto-run is working.....what
happens when you try to install the software via the Control Panel/Add or
Remove Programs?

One of them lists XP. The others are Windows 95/98/2000. I've tried the
compatability wizard on them (with all the different settings), and it does
not do anything at all. Setup never runs. It just goes straight to the "Did
the program run correctly with these settings" page.

When I try to install them using the control panel, the same basic thing
happens. I can always find the setup.exe file when I browse, but when I
click to install the program nothing happens. Likewise when I just go into
MyComputer and double click on the setup file directly. It's so strange.

I am the administrator, as that is the only profile we have set up on this
computer. One of the programs is Kid Pix Deluxe 3. This is the one that
lists XP on the box. When I contacted Broderbund about this, they said that
it was "last years model" and they no longer help people with it. I just
bought this a week ago.

Thanks so much for any suggestions.

KidPix Deluxe works on XP. As for your older software, if it won't run
in Compatibility Mode it won't run. I'm sorry that you bought the wrong
software, but there is no point in buying software for a different
operating system and expecting it to work. In the future, always check
for system requirements for any software you are thinking about
purchasing.

It will be very difficult to try and pinpoint the reason for your
problem via newsgroup. It would be a better solution for you to take
the machine (and the software) to someone who can actually see what is
happening. This is a situation where "hands-on" is going to be
necessary.

Good luck,

Malke

Do you run the updates for XP? One of them has been a new installer- install
it if you haven't.
I think this is the latest, but you can always check:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

Are you logged on as administrator? Restrictions may be in place for user
installations.

Turn OFF or DISABLE Norton AV during the installation process.

First step is do delete all the contents in your windows temp folder.
