"cannot insert object" in Excel (even a button from Control Toolbox)

I am using the Control Toolbox to add any type of object to the
worksheet, but I keep getting the message:

"cannot insert object"

I have tried reinstalling Excel, as one post suggested, removing the
..EXD file from the temp Excel8.0 directory and a number of other
futile efforts.

Please help me!
